Israel "Pito" Cardona, born on November 30, 1974, in Hartford, Connecticut, is a retired American professional boxer known for his achievements in the junior lightweight and lightweight divisions. He began his professional career in 1993, quickly making a name for himself by winning his first 24 fights, including 18 by knockout. One of his notable victories during this streak was against Jeff Mayweather, from the renowned Mayweather boxing family, earning Cardona the International Boxing Organization (IBO) super featherweight title. In 1997, Cardona secured a significant win by stopping "Mighty" Ivan Robinson in the third round to claim the United States Boxing Association (USBA) lightweight championship. This victory was particularly impressive as Robinson had previously held the International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight title and later achieved two wins over Arturo Gatti. Throughout his career, Cardona faced several top-tier opponents. After retiring in 2002, he made a comeback in 2006, aiming to capture a major world title, and continued to compete until 2009, finishing his career with a professional record of 36 wins (28 by knockout) and 10 losses. Beyond his in-ring accomplishments, Cardona has been recognized for his contributions to the sport and his community. In 2008, he was inducted into the CES Ring of Honor, and in 2013, he was inducted into the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy in the state's boxing history. Outside of boxing, Cardona continued his dedication to his community as a Cub Master for Troop 49 out of Hartford, CT, where he mentored and guided young boys, instilling values of discipline, leadership, and teamwork. Additionally,After retiring from boxing, Cardona remained active in the sport by working as a trainer at Charter Oak Boxing Academy (Coba) in Hartford, sharing his experience and knowledge with aspiring fighters.
